I thought the crystals we found on P3X-562 were just ordinary rocks, but they turned out to be more powerful than we could have imagined. They put Jack through an experience he won't forget anytime soon!

When we arrived on P3X-562, we found a strange, glowing landscape. While Sam and I collected crystal samples, Jack wandered off to explore. He found more than he bargained for…

One of the crystals, believing itself under attack, knocked Jack out with a burst of electromagnetic energy. Frightened by what it had done, the crystal tried to heal him. Unable to grasp the human concept of death, it couldn't find the main source of Jack's pain: the death of his son, Charlie. In trying to help, the crystal turned itself into a clone of Jack, and came back through the Stargate with us to find Charlie.

After the mission debriefing, during which "Jack" was his usual indifferent, jaded self – a sign he was bored – the clone left the base to visit Sara, Jack's ex-wife. Meanwhile, at the SGC, Sam and I discovered that the crystals weren't lifeless lumps of rock, just as one of them changed and my face appeared in relief on the fragment's surface. Before we had time to analyze the situation, a furious Jack came through the Stargate, demanding to know why we'd left him behind on P3X-562!

O'Neill: You don't exactly pull your punches, do you… I nearly died.

After a medical exam assured us that "angry Jack" was the one we all know and love, Sam tried again to communicate with the crystal to see if it could explain what was going on. We learned that the crystal's race had been damaged when one of them accidentally killed a Goa'uld, and that its presence on Earth put us all in danger. In short, Earth's electromagnetic field is stronger than P3X-562's, and its effect was slowly destroying the crystals, which gave off radiation dangerous to humans.

When we heard that a certain "Jack O'Neill" had been admitted to hospital, we had a pretty good idea of what was happening… At the hospital, the radiation levels stabilized enough for Jack to talk to his clone. Finally understanding what had happened with Charlie, the crystal took on the boy's appearance, to show O'Neill that his son was still alive in his heart. It was very hard for Jack and Sara to see their son again, but I think it also helped them in a way that had never been possible before. We let Jack take "Charlie" home, through the Stargate, so he could say a final goodbye.

End of report

Energy crystals

Throughout history, crystals have been used in spiritual and religious rituals. Alternative therapists believe they channel the healer's energy through their thoughts to help the patient heal. Quartz crystals are used as conductors in radio transmitters, watches and computers. When natural quartz is compressed or bent, an electrical voltage is generated on its surface. When an electrical charge passes through quartz, it bends slightly and then vibrates at a steady frequency, a property that makes it the ideal material for regulating electrical pulses.

SG-1 detected no life forms on P3X-562, but brought back samples of blue crystals

As the crystal's energy weakened, "Jack" gave off rays of radioactive energy

To help him overcome his grief, the crystal turned into a clone of Charlie, O'Neill's son

He was ridiculed by the archaeological community for claiming that the Egyptian pyramids were over 10,000 years old and were in fact landing platforms for alien spacecraft. He was approached by Dr. Catherine Langford to work on translating the glyphs of the Stargate. Due to the secret nature of the SGC, Daniel's incredibly visionary ideas will never be officially recognized by his peers.

Superior's report: Col. O'Neill

When I met Daniel, I thought he was a real egghead. He never stopped analyzing everything! He could never leave well enough alone, which got us into plenty of trouble. But I have to admit our team's dynamic was seriously thrown off when he Ascended. And I missed that stubborn so-and-so like crazy! Despite our differences, he was always there when I needed him, even when he wasn't really there, if you know what I mean. But that touchy bunch of enlightened beings kicked him out for bending a rule or two. Their loss! I'm glad Danny's back!
