Capt. Sam Carter

This mission was really hard for me. I don't usually let personal matters get in the way of my work. But what could be more personal than a broken engagement and a completely insane ex-fiancé?

Jonas was convinced his work would free the people from their miserable existence

Jonas threatens to kill O'Neill if Carter refuses to activate the UV shield

By operating the second shield device, Daniel proves that Jonas is a false god

SG-1 was assigned to investigate the disappearance of SG-9, led by my former fiancé, Captain Jonas Hansen. His team had never returned from its mission to P3X-513. All we knew about the planet was that it had once been enslaved by the Goa'uld and was subject to surprisingly high levels of radiation.

We found one member of SG-9, Lieutenant Connor. He told us that Jonas, after some kind of nervous breakdown, was now posing as a god. He had convinced the people that if they built him a temple, he would protect them from the burning sun.

Before we reached the site, Connor was captured, and Jonas had him tied up outside to die in the sun. I had to help him! So I let myself be captured. I was sure that if I talked to Jonas, I could make him see reason. I should have known it wouldn't work out that way. All he wanted from me was my technical skills. Jonas had found a Goa'uld shield generator that would block ultraviolet radiation. He knew that if he got the device working, the people would worship him blindly. He had no intention of ever returning to Earth. I managed to grab Jonas's revolver, but I didn't have the heart to shoot him. I nearly married him, and that's not the kind of thing you forget easily!

Colonel O'Neill was captured trying to rescue Connor, and Jonas said he would kill him if I refused to activate the Goa'uld shield. I had no choice: I did as I was told. Jonas gathered "his" people in front of the Stargate, announcing that he would prove he was a god. But he hadn't realised that it takes two identical devices to generate the protective shield.

Daniel, Teal'c and a young native of the planet, Jamala, had recovered the second device.

When Jonas tried to activate the shield and failed, Daniel switched on the second one. The crowd turned on Jonas and threw him into the active Stargate. He probably died instantly, hitting the closed iris.

Jonas had lost his mind, and I couldn't save him. He wanted me to believe in him, and even talked about making me his goddess. But humans have no right to act as if they were gods. Any more than the Goa'uld do.

Daniel (about Jonas): What did you see in him?
Sam: I don't know, I guess I just have a thing for pathological lunatics!

SGC Teams

The President's original order was to create nine exploration teams, but there are currently seventeen. Plus support teams. Some have specific skills and include dedicated civilians in their ranks. SG-11, for example, is an archaeological exploration team. Others include soldiers from different branches of the military, like SG-3, which was a Marine unit. Many teams have members from the intelligence services, used to covert missions behind enemy lines, who are the best prepared for operations against the Goa'uld.
